A few weeks ago, I mentioned that Saurabh and I were planning a giveaway of some indie comics. To be honest, Saurabh is doing most of the heavy lifting—he’s providing the books and making the connections. I’m just helping spread the word through my newsletter and Instagram.
If you missed the earlier update, the comics have arrived, and we’re moving ahead with the giveaway!
Right now, I’m taking my time to read and review each title properly. Once I’ve wrapped that up, I’ll share the full details on how the giveaway will work.
In the meantime, feel free to follow 101Comics on Instagram to see the comics I’m reviewing, and definitely check out Comix.one while you’re there.
Here is yours truly announcing the giveaway.
Indie Comic Reviews of the Week
Alma #1 by Die Bold Comics - Comic Review
When I put down Alma #1, the first thing I did was reach for my phone to message Saurabh, the founder of comix.one. Just a day earlier, he had sent over a box full of indie comics for a giveaway we’re planning. Since I’ve read some Die Bold Comics before, I figured I’d start with something familiar.
Future Tales by Philip Tarl Denson - Comic Review
I honestly can’t recall if I grew up with fairy tales. I don’t remember hearing stories of Red Riding Hood or Jack and the Beanstalk. I am sure that my mother read them to me (along with plenty of books), my mother loved books and she is probably the reason why I love them as much as I do.
Sissonne – Comic Review
In French, the word “Cisauex” (similar pronunciation to Sissonne) means “scissor”. However, “Sissonne” is named after the man who invented the step. It is done by starting with two feet on the ground, jumping in the air, and landing on one foot
News Highlights
Marvel Studios Releases Ironheart Trailer
Marvel Studios has officially released the trailer for its long-awaited Disney Plus series Ironheart, five years after its initial announcement. The show centers on Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne), a teenage genius first introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The trailer showcases Riri navigating challenges beyond her expertise and facing the antagonist The Hood (Anthony Ramos), a formidable supervillain with mysterious motives. Set in the aftermath of Wakanda Forever, the series follows Riri as she develops her Ironheart armor and seeks her identity in a super-powered world, rather than stepping into Tony Stark's legacy. Executive producer Ryan Coogler emphasizes that Riri's journey is about forging her own path, not inheriting Iron Man's mantle. The show features action sequences with various upgraded Ironheart suits and highlights Riri’s home city of Chicago. Initially announced in 2020, the show's release was delayed due to Marvel's shift in strategy to spread out Disney Plus content more effectively. Ironheart will premiere with three episodes on June 24, 2025.
Alison Bechdel Returns with Spent
Alison Bechdel is back with Spent, her first fiction since 2008. Blending autobiography and satire, the graphic novel follows a fictionalized Bechdel navigating creative block, activist life, and community chaos in Vermont. It’s witty, self-aware, and full of heart.
